One of the most common questions we hear from independently published authors before their first audiobook project is simple: how long is this going to take?
It's a fair question. If you're planning an audiobook launch around a book release, a speaking engagement, a course launch, or a seasonal marketing push - you need to know your timeline before you book your first session.
The honest answer: most independently published audiobooks go from first recording session to live on Audible in 6 to 12 weeks. But that range depends on several factors that are worth understanding before you start planning.

The five stages of audiobook production and how long each takes
Audiobook production moves through five distinct stages. Here's what happens at each stage and how long each typically takes.
Stage 1 — Pre-production and planning
Typical duration: 1 to 2 weeks
Before a single word is recorded, there's planning to do.
At .wav Enthusiast pre-production includes your free consultation, production plan, narrator decision, and session scheduling. If you're using a cast narrator we also conduct auditions and confirm casting during this stage.
What affects this timeline:
Narrator casting takes longer than author narration. If you're narrating yourself pre-production can move quickly, sometimes within days. If we're casting a professional narrator, auditions and selection typically add 1 to 2 weeks.
Your availability also matters.
If you have a clear schedule and can commit to session dates quickly pre-production moves fast. If you're juggling a busy schedule it can stretch to 2 to 3 weeks.
Stage 2 — Recording sessions
Typical duration: 1 to 4 weeks
Recording is the most variable stage in the timeline.
The basic math: one finished hour of audiobook audio requires approximately 2 to 3 hours of recording time. A 6-hour audiobook therefore requires roughly 12 to 18 hours of total recording time spread across multiple sessions.
At .wav Enthusiast we typically schedule sessions in 3 to 4 hour blocks. That means a 6-hour audiobook might involve 4 to 6 recording sessions.
What affects this timeline:
Book length is the biggest factor. A 40,000-word book records faster than an 80,000-word book.
Author narration vs professional narrator also matters. First-time author-narrators typically need more takes and more coaching time than experienced professional narrators. We factor this into your production plan from the start.
Session frequency is within your control. Authors who can commit to sessions 2 to 3 times per week complete recording in 2 to 3 weeks. Authors who can only come in once a week extend the recording phase to 4 to 6 weeks.
Stamina matters more than most authors expect. Narrating your own audiobook is physically demanding. Most first-time author-narrators find that 3 to 4 hours is their comfortable maximum per session before vocal fatigue affects performance quality.
A realistic recording estimate by book length:
40,000 words → 4-5 hours finished
→ 8-12 hours recording
→ 3-4 sessions → 1-2 weeks
55,000 words → 6-7 hours finished
→ 12-16 hours recording
→ 4-5 sessions → 2-3 weeks
70,000 words → 8-9 hours finished
→ 16-20 hours recording
→ 5-6 sessions → 2-4 weeks
Stage 3 — Post-production
Typical duration: 2 to 4 weeks
Post-production is where your recorded audio becomes a finished, professional audiobook.
At .wav Enthusiast post-production includes detailed audio editing to remove breath noise, mouth sounds, pacing inconsistencies, and technical imperfections, followed by mixing, mastering, and quality control against ACX specifications.
Post-production typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours of work time per finished hour of audio. For a 6-hour audiobook that's 9 to 12 hours of post-production work — but this work happens in the background while you continue your normal schedule. You're not needed in the studio during post-production.
What affects this timeline:
Recording quality directly affects post-production time. Clean, consistent recordings move through editing faster. Sessions with frequent retakes, environmental noise, or inconsistent pacing require more editing time.
Revision rounds add time. We include revision rounds in every project and encourage authors to listen carefully to the finished audio before approving for submission. One round of revisions typically adds 3 to 5 business days.
At .wav Enthusiast we run post-production concurrently with later recording sessions where possible, editing earlier chapters while later chapters are still being recorded. This compresses the overall timeline significantly.
Stage 4 — ACX review
Typical duration: 7 to 14 business days
Once your audiobook is produced, mastered, and quality-checked, we submit your files through your ACX dashboard.
ACX then reviews your files for technical compliance, checking loudness levels, peak ceiling, noise floor, file format, and file structure against their published specifications.This review typically takes 7 to 14 business days. It is not something you or your studio can speed up. It's a queue managed by ACX's internal team.
What affects this timeline:
Volume on ACX's end can vary. During busy periods — particularly around Q4 and the new year — review times can stretch to the longer end of the range.
File quality determines whether you go through review once or multiple times. Files that don't meet ACX specifications are rejected and you restart the review clock with corrected files. At .wav Enthusiast we've never had a file rejected at submission — which means our clients go through review exactly once.

Stage 5 — Go live on Audible
Typical duration: 5 to 10 business days after ACX approval
Once ACX approves your files your audiobook goes live on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes within approximately 5 to 10 business days.
You'll receive an email notification from ACX when your title is live. At .wav Enthusiast we monitor submissions and notify you the moment your audiobook appears on Audible.
If you chose non-exclusive distribution and want your audiobook on additional platforms (Spotify, Voices, Apple Books, Libro.fm) we handle those submissions simultaneously with the ACX submission so all platforms go live around the same time.

The more frequently you can record the faster the recording phase moves. Two or three sessions per week rather than one cuts recording time in half.
Come prepared

We send audio for your review throughout production rather than waiting until the end. Providing feedback quickly keeps post-production moving and avoids bottlenecks.

Planning your audiobook launch

Give yourself a minimum of 12 weeks from first session to launch day. 10 weeks is achievable with a smooth production. But 12 weeks gives you buffer for revision rounds, ACX review variance, and any unexpected delays.
