Audiobook Distribution for Independently Published Authors: A Complete Guide
Audible, Spotify, Apple Books, and beyond. How to get your audiobook everywhere listeners are
Getting your audiobook produced is only half the equation. Where you distribute it determines how many people can find it, listen to it, and buy it.
Most independently published authors start with Audible — and for good reason. Audible is the world's largest audiobook platform with over 40 million listeners. But Audible isn't the only place your listeners are, and the decision you make about distribution at the moment of submission will affect your royalties and your reach for years to come.
This guide covers every major audiobook distribution platform, how to get on each one, the royalty structures you need to understand, and how to make the right distribution decision for your specific book and audience.
We're the team at .wav Enthusiast, a Downtown Los Angeles audiobook production studio. We handle distribution to every platform on behalf of every author we work with. This is everything we know about audiobook distribution, and everything you need to know before you submit.
The audiobook distribution landscape in 2026
The audiobook market has grown significantly in recent years. Audiobook sales reached $2.22 billion in 2024, returning to double-digit growth at 13% year over year. The listener base is expanding across age groups, genres, and platforms — and the days when Audible was the only meaningful distribution channel for indie authors are over.
Today the major audiobook distribution platforms include:
Audible / Amazon / Apple Books (via ACX)
The largest platform by listener volume and the primary distribution channel for most indie authors. ACX — the Audiobook Creation Exchange — is run by Audible and Amazon and connects authors and rights holders with narrators and producers. It distributes finished audiobooks directly to Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books (iTunes).
Spotify
The world's largest audio streaming platform with 600+ million users. Spotify Premium members get 15 hours of monthly audiobook listening from a catalog of over 200,000 titles. Additional hours or standalone titles can be purchased via the Spotify Web Player. Available to indie authors through Spotify for Authors — Spotify's own direct upload portal — or through Voices by INaudio as part of wide distribution.
Apple Books
Apple's built-in audiobook app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Unlike subscription-heavy services, Apple Books uses an à-la-carte purchasing model where listeners buy titles individually. Available through ACX non-exclusive distribution or through aggregators like Findaway Voices.
Libro.fm
A digital audiobook service that splits its profits with a local independent bookstore of the listener's choice. Costs $14.99 per month for a membership and offers DRM-free audiobooks — meaning listeners truly own their purchases. Growing in popularity among readers who want an ethical alternative to Amazon-ecosystem platforms.
OverDrive / Libby
OverDrive powers Libby — the modern library audiobook app used by thousands of public libraries worldwide. Listeners borrow audiobooks through their local library card using the Libby app on iPhone, Android, or web browser. Authors earn per-borrow royalties. All you need to access Libby is a smartphone and a valid library card.
Downpour
An independent digital audiobook retailer and app owned by Blackstone Publishing, offering over 425,000 downloadable titles. Blackstone is also the parent company of RBMedia — the world's largest audiobook publisher, housing major imprints like Recorded Books and Tantor Audio. Downpour offers a retail alternative to Audible for listeners who prefer subscription-free purchasing.
Google Play Books
Google's digital store and reading app available on Android, iOS, and web browsers. Lets listeners buy and access audiobooks without a monthly subscription, with hands-free listening available through Google Assistant.
Wide distribution aggregators
Platforms like Findaway Voices (Spotify for Authors), Voices by INaudio, and Authors Republic allow indie authors to distribute to multiple platforms simultaneously through a single submission — rather than submitting to each platform individually.
ACX exclusive vs non-exclusive
The most important distribution decision you'll make
When you submit your audiobook through ACX you choose between two distribution options. This decision directly affects your royalty rate and your ability to reach listeners beyond Audible — for up to 7 years.
ACX Exclusive Distribution
Your audiobook is available only on Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books (iTunes). You cannot distribute to Spotify, Libro.fm, OverDrive, or any other platform for the duration of the exclusivity term.
Royalty rate: 50% of list price
Term: 7 years from the date your audiobook goes live
ACX Non-Exclusive Distribution
Your audiobook is available on Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books AND you can simultaneously distribute through any other platform you choose.
Royalty rate: 30% of list price
Term: No lock-in
Important 2026 update: Audible is retiring its legacy flat-percentage royalty structure. Enrollment in the new model opened May 26, 2026 and the legacy model will be fully discontinued by December 31, 2026 — authors with existing titles need to actively enroll or remove their titles from distribution by that date. The exclusivity lock-in has also changed: the old multi-year term has been replaced with a 90-day minimum, after which rights holders can request a one-time switch between exclusive and non-exclusive distribution. Confirm current royalty rates at acx.com before submitting your audiobook.
The 20 percentage point royalty difference is significant but it's not the only consideration. Here's how to think about it:
Choose exclusive if:
Your primary audience is on Audible. You want to maximize per-sale royalties on the platform where most audiobook listening happens. You're comfortable with a 7-year commitment to Audible exclusivity.
Choose non-exclusive if:
You have an existing audience on Spotify or Apple platforms. You want to maximize discoverability across platforms rather than maximizing per-sale royalties on one. You're building a long-term catalog and don't want to be locked into exclusivity agreements for 7 years per title.
The math that most authors miss:
A book that earns modest royalties on Audible but reaches a significant audience on Spotify, Apple Books, and library platforms through OverDrive can generate more total revenue in wide distribution than it would at the higher exclusive rate on Audible alone.
At .wav Enthusiast we discuss distribution strategy during every free consultation — before a single word is recorded. The right answer depends on your book, your genre, and your audience.
Getting on Audible — the ACX pathway
For independently published authors Audible distribution happens through ACX — the Audiobook Creation Exchange. ACX is run by Audible and Amazon and is the direct pathway for indie authors to reach Audible's 40+ million listeners. For more information on ACX and what it is, see our full-guide: What is ACX?
Here's how it works:
Step 1: Create a free ACX account at acx.com using your Amazon login and claim your title by searching for your book and clicking "This is my book."
Step 2: Produce your audiobook to ACX technical specifications — or work with a studio that handles this on your behalf.
Step 3: Submit your files, metadata, and cover art through your ACX dashboard.
Step 4: ACX reviews your files (7-14 business days) and if approved your audiobook goes live on Audible, Amazon, and Apple Books within approximately 10 business days.
Step 5: Choose exclusive or non-exclusive distribution at submission.
For a complete step-by-step walkthrough of the ACX process see our guide to how to get your book on Audible.
At .wav Enthusiast we handle the entire ACX process on your behalf — from account setup through submission monitoring and go-live notification.
Getting on Spotify — two pathways
As of August 2025 getting your audiobook on Spotify requires a separate account and submission from your wide distribution setup — a change from the previous Findaway Voices model where Spotify distribution was built into the same account.
There are now two distinct pathways to Spotify distribution:
Pathway 1 — Spotify for Authors
Spotify's own direct upload portal for independent authors. Submitting directly through Spotify for Authors gives you detailed analytics on your audiobook's performance on Spotify specifically. This is the direct relationship with Spotify — no intermediary, no distribution fee on Spotify royalties.
Pathway 2 — Voices by INaudio
The platform formerly known as Findaway Voices — now an independent company led by veterans of Findaway Voices — continues to distribute audiobooks widely to 40+ platforms. Voices by INaudio reaches Apple Books, Libro.fm, OverDrive, Downpour, Google Play Books, Kobo, Hoopla, and dozens of additional platforms through a single submission.
Voices by INaudio offers an 80/20 revenue split — authors keep 80% of net profits across the platform network.
Critically: Spotify distribution is no longer automatic through Voices by INaudio the way it was under Spotify ownership. To get your audiobook on Spotify you now need a separate Spotify for Authors account in addition to your Voices by INaudio account.
The recommended approach for maximum reach in 2026:
Step 1 — Submit to ACX (non-exclusive if pursuing wide distribution)
Step 2 — Submit to Voices by INaudio for wide distribution to 40+ platforms
Step 3 — Submit directly to Spotify for Authors for Spotify-specific distribution and analytics
At .wav Enthusiast we handle all three submissions as part of our full-service distribution package.
Getting into libraries — OverDrive and Libby
Library distribution is an underutilized channel for many independently published authors — and one of the most valuable for long-term discoverability.
OverDrive powers Libby — the modern library app available on iPhone, Android, and web browsers. Thousands of public libraries worldwide use OverDrive to give patrons access to digital audiobooks. All a listener needs is a smartphone and a valid local library card to get started.
When a listener borrows your audiobook through their library you earn a per-borrow royalty. More importantly, library listeners often become buyers — and library availability signals credibility to readers who discover your book through their local library system.
OverDrive distribution for indie authors is available through Findaway Voices as part of its distribution network. You don't need to negotiate directly with OverDrive or with individual libraries — Findaway handles the library distribution relationship.
Supporting independent bookstores — Libro.fm
Libro.fm is a digital audiobook service with a distinctive model: it splits its profits with a local independent bookstore of the listener's choice.
At $14.99 per month for a membership, Libro.fm offers DRM-free audiobooks — meaning listeners truly own their purchases rather than licensing them from a platform. This resonates strongly with readers who are conscious of supporting independent businesses and prefer ownership over subscription.
Libro.fm is available through Findaway Voices as part of its wide distribution network.
Wide distribution aggregators — reaching multiple platforms through one submission
Rather than submitting to each platform individually, wide distribution aggregators allow you to reach multiple platforms through a single upload. Here are the main options available to independently published authors:
Voices by INaudio
The platform formerly known as Findaway Voices — now an independent company as of August 2025. Distributes to Apple Books, Libro.fm, OverDrive, Downpour, Google Play Books, Kobo, Hoopla, and 40+ additional platforms. Authors keep 80% of net profits. Note: Spotify distribution is now handled separately through Spotify for Authors and is no longer automatically included through Voices by INaudio.
Spotify for Authors
Spotify's own direct upload portal for independent authors. Submit here specifically for Spotify distribution and access to Spotify-specific analytics. Free to use — no distribution fee on Spotify royalties.
Authors Republic
A digital audiobook distributor focused on helping independent authors reach a broad range of retail and library platforms. An alternative to Findaway Voices worth evaluating for authors building wide distribution strategies.
What happened to Authors Direct?
Authors Direct was a specialized app and sales platform run by Findaway Voices that allowed indie authors to sell audiobooks directly to listeners or distribute review codes. The dedicated Authors Direct service has since been discontinued. Authors looking for direct sales alternatives can explore BookFunnel or Soundwise for selling audiobooks directly to their audience.
Direct sales — selling to your own audience
Direct sales — selling your audiobook directly to listeners without a platform intermediary — is the highest-margin distribution option available to independently published authors.
With the discontinuation of Authors Direct, the leading tools for direct audiobook sales are:
BookFunnel
A popular platform among indie authors for delivering digital products directly to readers. BookFunnel is widely used for audiobook review copy distribution, reader magnet delivery, and direct sales — and integrates with many email marketing platforms.
Soundwise
A platform specifically designed for selling audio content directly to listeners. Authors set their own prices, keep a high percentage of revenue, and build a direct listener relationship outside of the major platform ecosystems.
Direct sales work best as a complement to platform distribution, not a replacement. Distribute on Audible and Spotify for discoverability. Sell directly to your existing audience — email list, social media followers, course students, speaking audiences — for higher margins and direct listener relationships.
Google Play Books
Google Play Books is Google's digital store and reading app available on Android, iOS, and web browsers. Listeners can buy and access audiobooks without a monthly subscription, with hands-free listening available through Google Assistant.
Google Play Books reaches Android users globally — a significant audience that overlaps only partially with Audible and Apple Books. Distribution to Google Play Books is available through Findaway Voices as part of its wide distribution network.
Building a distribution strategy for your specific book
There's no single right distribution strategy for every independently published audiobook. The right approach depends on several factors:
Your genre and audience
Audible listeners skew toward business, self-help, and thriller. Spotify's audiobook audience is younger and more genre-diverse. Apple Books users are heavily Apple-ecosystem consumers. Library users through OverDrive and Libby span all genres but skew toward fiction. Know where your audience is.
Your existing platform presence
If you have an established audience on Spotify — through podcasting, music, or existing content — Spotify distribution should be a priority. If your audience is primarily Amazon readers already buying your Kindle books, ACX exclusive may maximize your returns.
Your catalog size
Authors with multiple titles benefit more from wide distribution — each title on multiple platforms creates more discovery opportunities that can lead listeners back to your catalog. Single-title authors may see more value in Audible exclusivity while building their initial audience.
Your royalty priorities
If maximizing per-sale royalties on your best-performing platform is the priority, ACX exclusive at 50% makes sense. If maximizing total revenue across all platforms is the priority, non-exclusive wide distribution may generate more despite the lower per-sale rate on Audible.
At .wav Enthusiast we handle distribution to all platforms you choose — Audible via ACX, Spotify via Spotify for Authors, Apple Books, Libro.fm, OverDrive, Google Play Books, and beyond via Voices by INaudio. We manage all three submission pathways on your behalf. Before you make your distribution decision make sure you've worked through our complete audiobook production checklist.
A note on audiobook pricing
Pricing your audiobook is a separate decision from distribution — but they're related.
On Audible, most listeners purchase audiobooks using Audible Credits rather than paying the list price directly. Your royalty is calculated as a percentage of the list price regardless of whether the listener used a credit. Higher list prices don't necessarily mean higher revenue since most credit-based purchases are valued the same regardless of list price.
Standard audiobook pricing on Audible typically ranges from $14.95 to $34.95 depending on length and genre. Most independently published audiobooks in the self-help and business genres are priced between $19.95 and $29.95.
On Spotify, Premium members receive 15 hours of monthly audiobook listening included in their subscription. Additional hours or standalone titles can be purchased through the Spotify Web Player.
On Apple Books and other à-la-carte platforms listeners pay the list price you set directly — competitive pricing relative to comparable titles in your genre is the standard approach.
On Libro.fm listeners access your audiobook through their $14.99 monthly membership — with a portion of that revenue going to their chosen independent bookstore.
